Kia Forte vs Proton Preve vs Honda City vs Toyota Vios

If you are reading this, you are either of the two following groups:
1. Someone looking to buy a car (just graduated / just got a pay rise)
2. Someone looking to find out whats the fuss all about

Either way, you've come to the right place!

So how do you decide on which is best? Your dads telling you to go for a Japanese car, your girlfriends telling you to go Korean while your bank balance is telling you to go for Proton.

Let me help you break it down:
First, lets look at the vehicles and compare them in terms of Price, Safety, Power and Fuel Efficiency, Features and finally Looks. If it comes to a tie, we shall then look at other minor offerings stashed in along by the car makers.

Once, we have compared them, then you get to look at yourself and consider whether which car was meant for you. Sometimes, its just fated my friend...

Head to Head (Battle Royale)

Price

-as checked on 24 July 2012

Model
Toyota- Vios 1.5G Limited (AT)
Honda – City 1.5 Grade E
Kia – Forte 1.6 SX
Proton – Preve 1.6 CVT Premium
Price
RM89,613.50
RM88,103.00
86, 285.26
RM72, 990.00

With the four models being in the same engine range, the Proton Preve is definitely way cheaper than the competition. However do note that the CIty, Forte and Preve all come with 5 year Warranties which could further save you money. But we should judge based on value rather than price when you compare them. The formula would be Value = Specifications/ Price.

Safety

Lets face it my friend, you will be bringing along your loved ones in your car and so you have to look out for their safety while you drive like you are on the track. =P

Model

Yet again the Preve tops the chart on safety features. The most important feature here that you should try to include in your car which you may be driving for the next 5 years at least is the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) or (ESC), BA and TC which will really give you the confidence to tackle any road. Do not settle for less. The Kia Forte and Preve have the required safety features with Preve being even better by having side airbags as well.

 Power and Fuel Efficiency

Model
Toyota- Vios 1.5G Limited (AT)
Honda – City 1.5 Grade E
Kia – Forte 1.6 SX
Proton – Preve 1.6 CVT Premium
Engine Tech
VVTI
VTEC
CVVT
CAMPRO CFE
Transmission Tech
4 speed A/T
5 speed A/T
6 speed A/T (Paddle Shifter)
CVT (7 speed Protronic, Paddle Shifter)

You must be wondering what does all this terms matter. In short, in terms of engine tech, Proton Preve would have the most power in acceleration and top speed. Initial response from test drives and YouTube postings indicate that the Preve is truly a beast to be reckoned with on the Highways. It is hard to match the acceleration of the Preve and even several 2.0l cars have lost to the Preve on the road.

The fuel consumption however, I would say will vary greatly between drivers regardless of which car. All four cars would give you reasonable kilometres to the liter. So do not worry too much about petrol consumption as you are doing fine as long as your vehicle is below 2.0 ccs and its not an SUV or any larger vehicle. However, for my friends who happen to be very choosy, the honda and toyota are lighter in build than the other two models, have smalled engine ccs at 1.5l each, and as such may give you better fuel consumption. But remember, it would be only slightly better if at all. Meanwhile, the 6 speed A/T of the Forte does give it a very smooth drive, with a very quiet engine at 110km/h with the engine revving at only 2500 rev/min which results in good fuel efficiency as well.

Features

Machas advice, feature wise my list is like this:
1. Preve
2. Forte
3. Vios & City

For around the same price, the Preve and Forte give you almost everything you can wish for in a car. Your comfort and entertainment are all taken care off. The design had been very thoughtful with Auto Head Lamps, GPS units, Paddle Shifters, large boot space. In this case, Im going with either Preve or Forte.

In terms of build quality however, I personally prefer the Vios and City. Because everything just feels solid and of high quality.

Looks

There is no point in putting up the pictures to describe which car is the best looking. As beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The answer to this question is simple, touch your heart and you will know which car you can imagine yourself getting out of. My pick is with the Forte. However, my good friend loves the City's looks. So to each, his own.

Deciding

The fact is, you have seen the general facts regarding each car. It depends on you to decide which factors rank high or low in your list. My list is like this:
1. Safety
2. Power & Fuel Efficiency
3. Features
4. Price
5. Looks

So it really depends on you to weigh the factors and decide. Lastly, once you have decided, you definitely need to book a test drive to ensure that you truly feel great in the car you have chosen. So do go for a test drive and take the car through its paces, after the drive, you will know for sure.

Also do speak with the sales agent and find out what extras would you be entitled for if you buy the car. Sometimes they tend to offer freebies like GPS and etc if it doesnt already come with your car. (Note: Preve and Forte both come with built in GPS systems)

Making the purchase

Once you are certain regarding the car you want to buy, do ensure that you have enough finances to place the deposit. Usually it is 10% of the car's on the road price. Macha's advice is to ensure you have at least 15% of the cars price available when you are making the deposit. This is just a measure to make sure you always have extra cash for things like "Tinting", and other additional accessories that may come at a bargain from the car dealer. Go with your heart, you will know which car seems worth it to you. (Note: Do resist persuasion by salesmen to "book it now" and other sales tactics, to make sure you have made the best decision when you finally place your booking)

  2. Hi Macha,
Actually i also want to get a new car..but not sure which to choose.
After do some comparison on those cars you mentioned..i also feel that Forte is better than others...
But the question is resale value of car.
what do you think 4 of them
Can you please share about your experiences/opinion.

  3. Hi Shane,

in terms of resale the Japanese brands still are the best. However, do take note that resale depends on how competitive the model is at time of resale. Korean cars are improving in terms of resale value and very soon they will equal Japanese cars. Safe bet is to go with the Japanese cars if you are concerned primarily with resale.

  4. In terms of reliability of the car?

  6. how about the forte EX auto?same as forte SX?i was thinking about EX modal cos the price is cheaper.or should i wait for new forte modal this year?

  7. Hi Macha,

I went to KiaMotor for test drive (forte 1.6sx)and get a good experienced for that. The salesman actually offer me cash rebate and 3 years free service or 100k milleage which i feel its very worth to consider. However my biggest concern is the resale price. And yet Vios resale price is high.Anyway is it new forte 2013 launching or same with previous version i tried (6speed)?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Forte EX has all the key features of the SX. However, for a little bit more, you get to get a complete package. Definitely a pity if you go for the EX.

As far as I know, there is the new K3 launching this year. However, it may be sometime in June or September when you can get your hands on it. YOu can search it up online for the looks and general specs. In short, if you can wait, get the K3. I personally prefer the current Forte's looks. More aggresive =).

Speaking of resale value... yes definitely a Vios will fetch you a good resale price. but you must realise, that buying that car is a purely COST saving measure. I bought a Forte and the resale value drops by 10k every year unlike vios which drops only 5k per year. however, I did not buy the car just so i have a transport for a couple of years before I sell it for another cost saving car... Forte is about pleasure... it is about feeling good in it... feeling safe in it... about enjoying driving in it... about getting oohs aahs from people who see it... Priceless... You live only once... and i want to remember that I drove that car that looked awesome to me... cost, OR pleasure.... vios or forte... Just my opinion again.. =)

  9. Hi Tamila Skanda,

Your service is 10,000 km once. This takes between 3 to 6 months to achieve. Each oil service is about RM280. Insurance is just like any car priced at RM83,000: around RM2k per year before deducting NCB. Experience wise, Im really happy with the car. Enjoy driving it and feels good in it.

  11. I bought a forte before CNY with high cash rebates + free service. with tons of free gift. Most importantly, after 2 month of driving, i have no regrets as this car really serve me well. I park beside my friends car which is vios and city, and i can feel the jealousy from them. Ang btw, go for the SX.

I actually is choose 1.6 Forte SX,.. . typo error! sorry!

  14. Hi Jason. I wondered the same thingas well. Then I realised that there were no wiring going into the seat belt lock. They have probably removed it due to customer complaint. However, after all this year driving the car, I dont bother about that as I always use my seat belt.. its second nature I believe. Bdw, on the milieage I believe all the three cars are around the same area of consumption. None that would shock you positively or negatively

  15. Macha,

Hai bro. you also drive forte SX1.6 rite!! do you facing the same thing i facing now, of course from what i know is every car when stop the Air-Cond water will leaking from air-cond (this normal) but i wonder why even when i do reserve for parking my car the water alrd start came out from there!! my Quention is, is it normal?? do you notice.. . . ?

  16. Actually, our air conditioning runs on a special refrigerant gas. There is no part that has water in the air cond. The water solely comes from condensation around the air conditioning tubes and parts. No worry there. I have never really noticed. You should only take an oil stain seriously.

  19. Hi kny, it's down to the money or features. City depreciates very slowly. But for 72k you might as well buy a Mirage. Very very good mileage whilst being japanese.

It's true the warranty will void if not sent to kia service centre for periodically service within first 5 years, my friend just sent his car for the first 1000km and after that he go to normal workshop

    1. Hi there bro..
The decision for the car should be based on a few things: Warranty, Accident record, Service Record, and Gearbox on the car. I believe the 2010 forte has a 4 speed gearbox. No fun if u ask me. For that price you can get a 1.6 sx forte from 2011. 2011 is the year 6 speed forte was introduced. Makesure it's also has 5 year warranty if you wana buy it. If not don't bother. It's costly with all the complex electronics n all.

  27. Hi macha.. im from Kuching. Yesterday I test drive used Kua Forte 1.6 6 speed with mileage less than 10k km. I m looking for a 1st car. I m into Honda City, Toyota Vios n oso Kia Forte. Between these cars, honda city price is 83k after rebate. Toyota Vios is around 78k to 84k with slmost same feature. Difference of 5 speed n 4 speed n oso torque

as Kia Forte is no longer in production, luckily I found few used kia forte. On ur opinion, am I making the right decision by choosing used kia forte 2011 compare to New honda city n New Vios?

How about the maintenance of kia forte? Is it costly compare to honda city?

My average salary is 2k. My down payment for my 1st car is 12k. After calculate, mthly installment for used kia forte is rm731 for 9 years.

does it worth it compare to honda city? Mthly installment fir honda city is rm800+.

    Pls give advice. Tq.

    1. Thanks for the question. I'd like to share with you my honest opinion. Your loan can be a maximum of 30% of your net salary. Which is after epf and etc. But practically speaking, with an average petrol expenditure of 300 a month, half your salary will be gone. You will never be able to save towards buying your own home in the next 9 years or more.

Servicing for the kia is once every 10k km. And it's pretty cheap at RM270+. City servicing is every 5k km at RM170+... THINK aabout it ok. Coz cars are liabilities

  28. Hi Macha,
Just took a test drive on the Proton Suprima S Premium yesterday. It has a lot of features matching the Forte or even better it. Even the handling is great. I'm very tempted to purchase it but worry about its cost of spare parts and the cars' resale value. The resale value is it worst than a Forte? I wouldn't want the spare parts as expensive as a Proton Savvy's spare parts.
    Pls advice. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello there,

Ive heard great things about the Suprima. I personally would give it a shot if I was looking for a car now. In terms of spare parts I dont think you should worry as it is a Proton after all. The volume of sales will determine the resale value of the car. If there are many Suprimas out there, the parts will be cheaper and the resale value will be better. So, a good bet would be to buy a car that has been produced for the past 3 years to get a good estimate of its market performance. For instance, my Forte which was valued at 60k last year has been valued at 65k this year. a surprising increase in market value due to the fact that production of fortes have stopped. Anyone looking for a car like forte now has to fork out more as the only option is Cerato or above which is 90k+... so resale is really up to you. but my last advice to you, buy a car you enjoy driving, feel safe and feel happy to look at. coz thats the joy i feel when i drive my car. i dont even care anymore about the petrol consumption as I beat every speed limit there is.. because the car is just so awesome to drive.. pure pleasure everytime. so do think about that. if u love th suprimas handling.. go for it. u wont regret it

  31. Fuel consumption for this car is 5.8l/100km on highways and 9.0l/100km to for city..
Do take the car to a kia service centre to get the engine, Transmission, absorbers, drive shafts, air conditioning and electronics checked out before you purchase. Any seller who refuses is admitting that theres something wrong which they don't want you to know.. Walkway if you can't get it checked.. Some problems can cost more than 10k to get fixed which could be why it's being sold off.. Many sellers cite various reasons for selling but no one will admit it when they are selling due to foreseen major repairs..

    I hope I've been helpful

    1. Hi there,

I guess you could narrow down your choices by looking at your budget first. Then also look at resale value.. For example if the purchase price is 80000, and the resale value at 5 years is 45000, then you will loose 35000 in 5 years not to mention the 5 years worth of installments you will be paying. So do this calculation for all the options and then just pick which one you like.. All options have quality but the only difference is the looks. Engine wise it doesn't make a difference if 1.5 like vios or 1.6 CFE like Preve.. You will have enough power to cruise at 140kmph... Choice up to you after all this.. I would go for the Preve though.. But do check out the Preve owner forums for common problems.. And also check out the warranty claim process for each brand.. Like Kia makes you pay for warranty claims..

    3. hi macha,

thanks for your prompt reply.. i narrow my choice to City and Preve but after read a few blog/articles on the car i prefer, i think I opt for City because of the after sales service. Friend of mine who is Proton's user agreed that Proton's after sales service is not good compared to others brand. and I think Honda after sale value is higher than Proton.

      correct me if im wrong.

      thank you.

    4. I would agree with your choice in that case. You have chosen based on what's important to you. There's actually no right and wrong answers. Just what's perfect for you.
